Como
Tornado sirens wailed across Como Lake in St. Paul last Saturday, May 31st. Not that anybody cared. People continued their leisurely strolls around the lake as ominous clouds gathered in hues of grey and dark tones. Within an hour, hail and rain pounded the water, the storm cleared, the sun burst out boldly filling the sky rainbows, and then disappeared behind charcoal clouds again. None of this stopped the wedding at Black Bear Crossing or the onlookers who took the Minnesota summer weather in stride.

The community Workshop, held Friday, September 28 between 2:00-6:00, had 50 hard-packed sand blocks which participants scratched / carved designs, to be cast on Saturday.

Iran up close by Heather Wang
In May of 2007, I traveled to Iran with the Bay Area-based
organization Global Exchange, as part of a citizen diplomacy
delegation of 14 Americans and two guides, one Iranian American and
one Iranian national. We stayed in six cities and in addition to
visiting many tourist sites had many opportunities to walk around
unsupervised and unrestricted. Everywhere people expressed their
affection for Americans and their desire for peaceful relations with
the nations of the world – we all have a right to peace, to
understand and learn from each other, to improve the lives of our
nation’s citizens. To all appearances, the Iranians we spoke with
felt completely free to express their opinions publicly on politics,
social/gender issues, and the economy – the women were particularly
vocal, no matter if they wore the black chador or a tiny square of
fabric perched at the back of the head doubling as a headscarf.There are 15 images in this gallery

Kites in Winter
Delighted smiles, wide-open eyes, and frosted “ahs” & “ohs” predominately directed upwards, spreads the warmth of wonder over a frozen veneer. A play “ground” with tikes of all ages tangled in the flight of fancy, restorative wind buffeting our temporary presence off the summer’s beach. Another perspective of our neighbor’s family romp in a park.
These images are from the 2006 Lake Harriet Winter Kite Festival held on January 21, 2006. The Festival for 2007 was canceled on both, the scheduled, and back-up date, because of the weather conditions. The Winter Kite Festival for 2008 is scheduled for January 12, with a back-up date the following Saturday, Jan. 19.

My Minneapolis

I’ve lived in the Seward neighborhood of Minneapolis my entire life,
and over time I’ve learned to appreciate every little unique detail
about it. It is an incredibly diverse, artistic, liberal area in the
South side of Minneapolis. I love Minneapolis for the people, the
places, the sense of community, the diversity, the art, the lakes, the
trees, the bikes, and all of the progressive ideas within it. This
series of photographs is meant to represent my view on Minneapolis as
a whole. I began by biking all over Minneapolis and taking pictures of
things that caught my eye or spoke to me in some unique way. My
objective is for viewers to see the little things that make a big city

Greenway Bridge by Alan Wilfahrt
Some scenes of the construction, and November 8th’s Grand Opening inaugural lighting, of the Midtown Greenway Pedestrian / Bicycle bridge. Another reason to get out on a bike ride or a novel destination for a walk. With dramatic lighting, chances are this will become an icon of the Minneapolis night-time skyline. Rez adventures with the Indian Scout
By Deborah Locke, Fond du Lac NewsOn a fine summer afternoon the truck rumbled along miles of rez roads, some dirt, some tar, some so narrow that long tree branches reached for each other across the road, creating a canopy through which the sunlight danced.
Weeks earlier I asked an Indian Scout if he’d give an old-fashioned tour of Fond du Lac from outpost to outpost. Show me where the outlaws live and the bodies are buried, show me the second to the last home on the rez, show me the burger and gin joints, the shopping districts and churches, the blue water and green leaves and deer tracks.
The scout said you could live your entire life on the rez and never once need to venture into Brookston.
So that day Brookston, population 95, became a prime destination. To get there, we tooled down Reservation Road to the old Ojibwe cemetery. The Scout waited patiently as I snapped up trees and white crosses and quiet through the camera lens.
Back in the truck, we approached Sweet Grass Corner. The Scout brought his monster truck to a halt and hopped down to the road, scissors in hand.
He pointed out tall grasses, reached for the satiny, light green variety and started to clip close to the ground. A car passed and the Scout frowned. Now the word would get out that the sweet grass was ready and every Indian on the rez would line up to clearcut the corner.

Grumbling, he twisted the thick knot of grass into a braid, binding the ends with twine. The Scout turned the engine key as the smell of fresh sweet grass filled the truck’s cabin.
We were Brookston-bound again, but first the Scout needed to explain the housing. He pointed to two homes built with federal funds after the 1918 fire. He opined on the small Housing and Urban Development homes dotting the road, the same style that dot just about every reservation in the country. The HUD homes are the shape of the red plastic Monopoly board game hotels, except they’re a little bigger.
The Scout opined about housing and outlaws and roads that curve hard and cause people in cars to get killed. I breathed in the sweet grass air, feeling oddly safe.
Dirt road names rushed past: Brevator, Simon, Brookston, Mahnomen, Pine, Twin Lakes. We stopped at the small Twin Lakes beach where FDLers splash on weekends. Next stop, the middle of the road near downtown Brookston, where I put the camera to use. Sadly, I left my billfold in the office. There would be no retail hunting and gathering today.
The monster truck roared into the western reaches where the Scout promised a peek at the Last House on the Rez. Deer tracks outlined Brandon Road where the tree branches way up there reached across to each other. Clearings appeared without warning: homes and garages about to be swallowed by the big woods. Maybe you want to move out here, the Scout said. It would be quiet.
Yes. Too quiet. We drove down “Our Road,” according to the road sign, where a trailer at a T-intersection prompted another photo. Call that the Second to the Last Home on the Rez.
We thundered past maybe a million trees that afternoon, or a million leaves. We saw where the outlaws hide out, and where the breeze blows gently through the pine that surround the white crosses. We did what we set out to do, see it all, photograph what appeared curious or pretty, and talk about it later.

February 16 march
On a sunny Saturday afternoon in south Minneapolis, about 400 Latino immigrants and their families, students, and members of the activist community marched for immigrant rights on February 16.
Chanting “Sí se puede” and carrying banners that read “No human being is illegal” and “We are all immigrants in the struggle,” the marchers walked several blocks from the corner of Chicago and Lake to the Walker Community Church as a response to immigration proposals presented by Governor Pawlenty January 7.

2008 kite festival
On January 12th, 2008 the Lake Harriet Winter Kite Festival filled the sky with mirth. Pleasure descended to the frozen surface which buzzed in glee, as kite lines were exchanged, tugged and tangled. Skaters streaked, marshmallows gooey-ed cheeks, pets made new friends, young hands flapped in anticipation, and joy jumped about, any fish below kept a leery eye on the bobbers in the holes, and aerial lift-offs raised the heart as well. Alison Quito Ziegler
For two years I have been photographing immigrants across the state – in their homes, churches, workplaces, and schools – and designing ways for the photographs to be a catalyst for social justice. In the summer of 2005, I organized the Minnesota Family Project, a large-scale project installing 60 of my images on the exterior of a semi truck, which traveled to 33 events in 22 communities across the state. The inside of the truck was converted to a mobile gallery. As the truck parked in county fairs, town squares and public events, viewers were photographed then asked to write a brief family history highlighting their personal stories of immigration. The resulting 1,000 portraits were posted in the mobile gallery, creating an overwhelming portrait of Minnesota’s residents and their reasons for migrating, whether from Norway 150 years ago or from Somalia last year. As a self-taught artist, my mission has always been to create work that will challenge viewers to risk personal connection allowing us to create a more peaceful and a more powerful community.
I spent a summer photographing strangers around Minneapolis. I asked them to write down what was important to them, what they felt our world needed to hear. Their responses challenge us to acknowledge that we all long for the same things, for connection, for hope, for the chance to impact the lives of those we care most about and those we have never met.
Originally these images joined 150 others creating nine interactive photo-sculptures displayed in connection with Solomon’s Porch, a local faith community. My oldest brother started attending church with his father when he was a young boy. His father is a “born again†Christian who was saved by his sister and her husband, a pastor at Cornerstone Church. The church consists of a modest congregation of less than 50 members—mostly family, close friends, and a few new comers. Their worship hall is makeshift, temporarily housed in the basement of a building in Hudson Wisconsin while their new church is being built down the street. Cornerstone is non-denominational, and most closely resembles the Apostolic and Pentecostal sects of Christianity. These sects are known for their intense style of group worship and speaking in tongues. . My brother and I grew up together in a rather non-traditional family. All of us have the same mother, but there are three different fathers. Yet, I never considered these people as half-siblings, half or part family—we never used those dividing words in our house. My mother was never a religious person, and only made a few meager attempts to bring us to church or Sunday school. I was always skeptical of Christian belief and figured things out on my own by age six or seven when I asked someone why there were not any dinosaurs in the Bible. As time went by my sister and younger brothers became interested in my oldest brother’s enthusiasm for the Word. He invited them along to church and eventually it became a family event. He even managed to enlighten my mother through passionate spiritual debate and persuaded her to read the Bible. Now she is “born again†and attends mass every Sunday. The Cornerstone Project began in the fall of 2005 when I went to my brother’s baptism. At 13 he consciously chose to join the church in order to worship along side his older brother. At Cornerstone, baptism is not conducted in infancy, but rather it is a conscious choice of the individual when they become aware of their sins and recognize Jesus Christ as their personal savior. My teenage brother getting baptized in the Hudson River seemed a bit awkward to me, almost like an archaic ritual of some kind. So being the only member of my family that is not involved with this church, I was naturally curious of the happenings at Cornerstone. These photographs are a reflection of my experience at Cornerstone and of my personal relationship to the members of its congregation. Becoming familiar with such an intense spiritual environment, has allowed me to be hyper-aware of my emotional connection to this subject. As I have watched those closest to my heart become consumed by the power of the Lord, it has made me feel alienated and in some ways, a less respected member of my family. Although I am intimately involved with the people in these photos, I do not relate to their spiritual beliefs whatsoever. I have taken these photographs as an outside observer, in an environment that I believe to be very austere, and somewhat disturbing. -Ashley Rick Spring 2006

Bill Cottman
Since 1969, Bill Cottman has photographed simple images of people, places and things that have crossed his path. His early influences were photographs by Henri Cartier-Bresson, Robert Frank, Lee Friedlander, Gary Winogrand, Paul Strand and Edward Weston. According to Cottman, the IDS tower in the 1970s, reminded him in many ways of the Washington Monument that dominates the nation’s capital skyline.
Bill Cottman has exhibited at the Studio Museum of Harlem, New York, Corcoran Gallery, Washington, D.C., Walker Art Center, Minneapolis Institute of Arts, and the Katherine Nash Gallery, University of Minnesota.

Bryce Marback
Pokegama Creek road is a photographic series created during the Fall/Winter of 2005. It chronicles the lives of six children in a family of nine, between the ages of two and thirteen. Portraiture provided a means to share these children‚s coexistence in an obscure and inaccessible environment, constructed and activated by imagination, exploration, and play.
Sequestered by the burgeoning population boom of their once modest
hometown of Cambridge, Minnesota, the parents resolved to
relocate to a secluded farmstead tucked away near the town of Hinkley, Minnesota. Assimilating into a domain far removed from any significantly populated area served as a means for the parents to moderate their children‚s exposure to violence. It also gave them the opportunity to practice self-sufficiency, in an effort to surmount their dependence on manufactured commodities. Accompanied by the overwhelming feelings of serenity associated with farm life are the inevitable feelings of isolation, boredom, and discontent.
Home schooling, Roman Catholicism, and selected sources of media (i.e.
movies, television, and non-educational reading materials) influence the
children‚s perceptions of the outside world. This underlying tension and emotion creates images that reflect the mixed feelings of the children.editor’s note: Bryce Marback is a senior year photography major at the Minneapolis College of Art and Design.

I bought my first camera in sixth grade with Bazooka Bubble gum wrappers and 50 cents. But my love of photography really emerged from the stacks of National Geographic magazines in my grandparent’s den. By the time I was 15, I knew in my heart that photography was my niche, though I really didn’t have the means to go any further as I felt college was not an option. Seeing my struggle of doing something with my life, my father suggested I look into the military. And so I joined the Air Force with my recruiter’s promise of photography training. But 12 years and one war later the field remained closed. In 1992 I left the military and went to college. Now, 13 years later, photography is back in my heart and soul and I am pursuing it with all the energy I have left. The photographs were all taken since March, 2005, as I found myself in the middle of history-making events that were under-reported and diminished politically.

I photographed the extended Thao family in their homes, fields, and at the markets while I was working on a nonfiction photo book describing two families from the Saint Paul Farmer’s Market. (Farmer’s Market, Families Working Together, co-authored with writer Marcie Rendon, Carolrhoda Books, Inc, Minneapolis, MN) One family, the Thaos, immigrated to the Midwest from Laos after the conflict in Viet Nam. The other family, the Kornders, immigrated almost a century earlier from Northern Europe. Both families used the agricultural skills they learned in their native countries to gain a foothold in the economy of this country. And both families worked together across generations when they settled here; grandparents, parents, children, and cousins. This follows the pattern of most immigrants to the United States since this country became a safe haven for people from other more troubled parts of the world.

This gallery contains then and now images of North Minneapolis that were created for a University class in documentary photography, “The Changing Main Street in Small Town Minnesota.” Students were encouraged to find a “home town” that could be rephotographed from the same vantage point today. Christine chose North Minneapolis as her base. Here is why:
I moved to North Minneapolis as a single female 25-year old because I found a great house in my price range. Since that time, I married a wonderful carpenter and we are expecting our first child. Each year, as improvements and changes are made, the house has become more representative of who we are and I have grown more and more attached to it.
As our child is on his way I have been focusing more on our neighborhood.
Will he be able to have kick-the-can games with friends on summer nights? Am I going to worry if he is gone for the afternoon on his bike? At the same time I realize that a house in a less crime area of town would inhibit our ability to provide things such as sports, summer camps, family vacations, and the best education.
When I see so many young couples strolling the parkway with their dogs and strollers, I think this is a wonderful place. When I hear that a young man was caught in crossfire and killed a mere two blocks from home, I think I can’t stay.
It is too easy to let fear drive our actions versus taking the time to
understand problems. What is the root cause of the crime in my neighborhood? Why do people act the way they do and how might I perpetuate attitudes, myths, or neighborhood reputation? Researching the history of North Minneapolis has not prompted any final
decisions about staying here, but it has shed light on why our neighborhood is the way it is. Geography, early city development, and religious and racial segregation played roles in shaping the North Minneapolis community. Although I still have concerns about where I live, the research and rephotography has helped me to understand the effects of events in history.There are 8 images in this gallery

Cinco De Mayo in St. Paul
The bright colors, festive sounds, and delicious smells transformed Cesar Chavez Street in St. Paul for Cinco de mayo. This year’s celebration included six stages with live music and entertainment. The festivities ranged from a salsa tasting contest to a parade. People of all ages were able to enjoy a fun filled day.

Donald Clark
Donald Clark says: “The images included are reflective of the current direction of my work. These images deal with religious iconography and their symbolic nature. Religious iconography is juxtaposed with various everyday objects and situations that create new and often humorous meanings. The occurrence of these combinations allows for a reinterpretation of the symbolic significance of this religious iconography due to position and place. I am fascinated by these relationships that typically go unnoticed. “ (editor: some of this work is on view at the Minnesota Center for Photography in the Photocentric 2007 show, now through May 27) Donald is an Associate Professor of art/photography at Minnesota State University Moorhead. His most recent work “Religion and Symbolism” is a departure from the past twenty years of photographing land issues. . Major bodies of work included: Lava Intrusions, a view of man’s interaction with the lava flows of southeastern Idaho, Everglades Dichotomy, a photographic installation highlighting water issues impacting the Florida Everglades and The Idaho Nature Conservancy Lands Project, a body of work focusing on images of land owned by the Nature Conservancy of Idaho.

George Byron Griffiths
For nearly 10 years, I have been photographing the lives of three children – Eric, Courtney, and Jon – who were born with physical and mental disabilities. I began documenting their lives as I worked with them as a teacher’s aide in the Crosby-Ironton, Minnesota elementary school they attended. When I printed my first picture of Eric, I knew instinctively that photography was to become my chosen means of artistic expression. Watching Eric’s face swim slowly into focus in the liquid developer inspired me to explore the idea of exposure – of exposing film to light and paper to chemicals, of exposing myself to relationships that challenge me, and exposing these kids to a public who tends to look away from them. My direction has been to look beyond making a simple record of their lives and to craft something of beauty using subjects who are so often regarded as disconnected from the realm of Art.
The images in this photo gallery depict moments in the 11 days that Eric, a boy born not only with Down syndrome but also with a hole in his heart, spent with his family in Minneapolis for what was his fourth heart surgery since birth. Lake Street Festival
The first annual Lake Street Festival was a popular event this Fathers’ Day. The music festival stretched from Bloomington to 14th avenue on Lake Street celebrating the Latin communities contribution to redevelopment of the area over the last 15 years.

Lisa Marie Peterson on May Day
Viewers have a different take on parades than the participants who carefully planned their costumes, puppets and props. Parades are free from the constraints of confined spaces at events like plays. No one is there at a parade to judge you if you should contort your face in disgust, squeal in delight or simply fall out of your chair from boredom, something we’ve all wanted to do at one public event or another. May Day Parade watchers’ reactions ranged from confused and disgusted to actively engaged with the quirky and unusual scenes that passed by them. If Barclay Horner’s photo essay depicted the participants, these photos focus in on those of us who were there simply to take it all in.

Minnesota National Guard is sending the 2006-07 Aquatennial Queen to Iraq for active duty as a diesel generator mechanic. Jessica Gaulke, crowned queen during last summer’s Aquatennial, is honoring her committment to the Guard, made while she was in high school at Robbinsdale High. This photo essay by George Byron Griffiths shows the transition ceremony that took place on January 4 at the American Swedish Institute. The new queen is Jenna Bernhardson.

Losar, Tibetan New Year
Losar is the Tibetan word for New Year. Lo means “year†and sar means “new.†Losar begins on the first day of the first month of the Tibetan calendar, which is comprised of twelve lunar months. For the past two years, the holiday has hit in the middle of February. Usually, Losar begins with a prayer, called a puja, for protection, followed by the days of celebration, which can last from one day in the United States to three days in India and even fifteen days in Tibet.
In order to feed the thousand-plus people attending the event, Tibetan community members were instructed to bring dishes to share for a potluck-style buffet out in the hallway. “I’ m from Richfield, so I had to bring potatoes,†said Jigme Ugen, General Secretary of RTYC. For others, it was fried rice, steamed bread called tingmo or lentils.
As the night wore on, Tibetans of all ages filtered in and out of the large space in the Convention Center as people volunteered to sing onstage in Tibetan and Hindi, and raffle winners were announced.There are 7 images in this gallery

Martin Corbett
Martin Corbett portrays a Minnesota passion: threshing shows
Corbett says:
I am a documentary photographer who sees himself as more of a blue collar professional than an artist. I changed my view in the summer of 1999, when I documented my first threshing show. For the first time, I stopped forcing the photograph to say what I wanted it to say and gave complete control to my subject. Now my goal is to capture people as they are, lost in the moment.
In 1999 I attended, by accident, my first threshing show. What I found there thrilled me: it was as if I’d entered the rural, Depression-era landscape of my father’s childhood. Massive steam tractors and early gas engines ruled the dirt roads. One-stroke pump engines powered every thing from washing machines to table fans, and the music of the Carter Family and Bill Monroe was heard in the distance. The people, machines, and music were a testament to a lifestyle rapidly being replaced with more efficient production methods. The last six years I have traveled throughout Minnesota, documenting the people, machinery, and music at threshing shows. As a photographer whose roots are in the family farm, I feel a strong connection to rural Minnesota.
I hope these photos convey my love for the history of the early part of the 20th century, and the power that was created with nothing more than fire and wood. I find a beauty in its simplicity, which has been slowly eroded by corporations. I hope from my photos, people get a sense that life can be a little simpler.There are 10 images in this gallery

Minneapolis Juneteenth Festival
Grills were out on every block in Northwest Minneapolis for the Juneteenth Festival. After a parade weaved its way through the neighboorhood it ended in Theordore Wirth Park where storytelling, an Anual Sweet Potatoe Pie Contest and basketball games were just a few of the activites people took part in. Many others found some shade and just took in the day. The celebration continues through the rest of the week.

Noel Worden
The flourmills towering above the east side of Hiawatha are one of the last artifacts of the once booming flour industry of the Twin Cities and Minnesota. Although the flour industry is not dead, big corporations, not the small operations of the early 1900’s, now dominate the market. As a result the number of mills in the Twin Cities in general have declined. I am interested in the features of the structures, the way the elevators shoot out of the tops and sides of these mammoth concrete structures and weave in and out of themselves only to re-enter another concrete silo. While some see the signs of aging as an eye sore, I feel that the peeling paint, spots of rust, discoloration all ad to their beauty. While photographing and researching these mills I learned that they will be torn down and apartments built in their place. I am interested in capturing and documenting this transitional history. I feel that it is important for future generations, and the people of today, to have the opportunity to see what made the Twin Cities what they are today. With the works of David Plowden and Frank Gohlke as inspiration I intend to create photographs that are informative and at the same time artistic.

Powderhorn Audio Production by Alan Wilfahrt
I was once more impressed with a program, Audio Production Program, run by the Minneapolis Park and Recreation Board at Powderhorn Park. And I want to thank the class for allowing me to hang out as they were adding some lyrics to their previously recorded music. This past week I was photographing some old paper player piano rolls. I was marveling at the packaging and the technology that went into that recorded medium. This evening I witnessed recording of some contemporary artists, using current devices. I was impressed with how adept they were with the technology and procedures. Being digitally inclined myself, I could follow much of what they were doing on the screen, but marveled at their syncopated rhymes and lines dispatched in time. Delivered with weighted strength of youths vision; the poetry rocked. It looks as the kids are alright! Using the tools for self expression, – let’s give them more. They have the discipline and know rehearsal polishes their delivery; I am sure they are capable of surprise. So maybe the new player piano is a sound-booth, and paper notes still matter. And that was just a basement room in the center. The whole recreation center was vibrant and animated. Makes this old guy a mite less ornery, and a lot more hopeful. (Alan Wilfahrt)

Muslim Peacemaker Teams in Iraq and the connections between the

Worthington, by Quito Ziegler & MN Immigrant Freedom Network
On the feast day of Our Lady of Guadalupe, patron saint of Mexico, U.S. immigration agents swooped down on Swift Company meatpacking plants in six U.S. cities, including Worthington, Minnesota. Federal agents closed down the plant, sequestering the workers inside until those who looked like immigrants produced documents to prove their legal status. Most of those who could not do so were shipped immediately to out-of-state holding facilities. As news of the raid spread by cell phone, families fled their homes to take refuge in churches, in nearby cities, or even in wooded areas. During the days and weeks following the raid, food, diapers, toys and other assistance poured into Worthington to help the families left without breadwinners or without jobs. Alison “Quito” Ziegler, a photographer who has worked to document immigrant stories since the 2003 Immigrant Freedom Ride, was on the scene in Worthington in the days immediately following the raid and some of her photos appear here.

Youth of Phillips
The Phillips neighborhood of South Minneapolis is considered one of the worst, most violent, crime and poverty-ridden areas of Minneapolis. Yet, beneath it all is a life rich with culture and diversity, a place the residents call home and care about.
Seven girls, grades 7-9, from the Phillips neighborhood set out in June of 2006 to capture their neighborhood on film. All residents of Phillips, these young women understand the stereotypes and perceptions that surround their neighborhood and them as residents, yet also understand a side those from the outside will never know.
As part of the Waite House Community Center summer programs, these young women have taken 9 weeks to create a photography exhibit that will break the stereotypes and pre-conceived notions of about Phillips and its residents.
In their own words: “Probably u think wrong about this Phillips community. If you look up close and pay attention, this neighborhood is a neighborhood full of joy, fun and respect.”

Sesquicentennial wagon train
While traveling Friday afternoon on Highway 61 about 30 miles south of St. Paul we came upon a traffic slowdown. Instead of seeing accident vehicles and police we were surprised to come upon a wagon train of about 20 covered wagons heading north.
The Minnesota Statehood Sesquicentennial Wagon Train began an eight-day journey on April 4. It plans to be at the state Capitol in St. Paul on Sunday, May 11. According to the schedule posted on the group’s web site, http://www.ac-hs.org/wagontrainindex.htm the wagon trail will travel along Ford Parkway, and Cleveland and Summit Avenues on its way to the Capitol.
But folks on Summit shouldn’t be nervous. The wagons are being trailed by a motorized pooper-scooper vehicle.
