Theater note: "Real Women," proudly revealing their curves
Real Women Have Curves, a production of Teatro del Pueblo, opened at the Paul and Sheila Wellstone Community Center on Friday, May 9. About an hour into the play, the five women triumphantly shed their clothes and revealed their curves. The audience shared their glee because in doing so, the women were relieved—if only temporarily—of the constant pressures in their lives. The characters are likable, each actress perfectly chosen for her role, and we root for them to succeed. MORE »
Fighting cynicism, over breakfast
Looking out at the crowd seated for breakfast in the atrium of Mercado Central, U.S. Congressman Keith Ellison complimented his colleague, Minneapolis alderman Gary Schiff, on the wisdom of bringing his constituents together in that setting. “We need such spaces to discuss the issues we are passionate about,” said Ellison. Compassion in medicine
Mayo Clinic scientists, doctors and other health professionals waited April 16 under the glare of the security staff stationed in the conference room at Mayo Clinic. The excitement in the buzzing sound from everyone’s conversation was palpable, until the entry of several security men from the side door signaled the entrance of His Holiness, The Dalai Lama, head of the Tibetan government-in-exile, and a Buddhist spiritual leader. A hush swept over the room; everyone stood in eerie silence as the Dalai Lama entered with his head bowed and his hands clasped. You could have heard the proverbial pin drop as he took his position on the elevated stage. He spoke first and the audience breathed one collective sigh and smiled all together. MORE »
