Smoothly surreal art at the Spyhouse
by Jay Gabler, TC Daily Planet • June 30, 2008 • I’m sitting at the corner of 25th and Nicollet, watching people bump into my car as they try to parallel park…must be Monday! Fortunately the Spyhouse coffee shop here offers aesthetic and comestible pleasures to warm the heart and cool the lips.
While enjoying a cold press coffee (a little spendy, but probably worth it) or a Spychaser (a little spendy, and definitely worth it), check out the exhibit by artist Emmy Lingscheit. The prints that dominate the exhibit are skillfully rendered grotesqueries, but what really caught me were the four small pieces on the back wall—richly colored fantastic landscapes. Painted on ceramic tiles and laquered to a smooth sheen, they’re like photographs from another dimension where hills swallow houses, children hang from clotheslines, and windowless orange trains stretch to the horizon.
