General Vang Pao, hero

June 18, 2007

When I saw the headlines blinking from my computer screen, I had to do a double-take. And then a triple-take. And then I had to check three other news sites to make sure I was reading it correctly: Yes, General Vang Pao was indeed locked up!

Opinion: General Vang Pao, hero

My initial feeling, after the utter shock, was that if he and the others truly did conspire to blow Laos up, well, perhaps he should face-up to the charges like any other normal citizen.

But upon deeper analysis of the situation, it hit me. Gen. Vang Pao is no normal citizen. This is a man who, above and beyond everything we may know about him, is so devoted to his people that he has sacrificed his own happiness all this time to remain true to those who need him the most – those Hmong who have been suffering in Laos all these years.

It’s no secret. Every Hmong New Year for the last 30 plus years, this guy gets on stage and huffs and puffs about how he will lead us all back to Laos. Those of us too young to care about Laos really never gave it much thought, dismissing the speech as yet another empty promise among the list of other disappointments we’ve seen from Hmong leadership.

And yet our parents still honored the man as though he just opened the sky and handed civilization to the Hmong people.

To them, the General represented everything a George Washington or a Martin Luther King was to their respective constituents: Through bravery and innovation, he delivered a higher standard of living and a taste of the promised land.

To us, the General was this old guy in an ill-fitting suit who was at the end of his tenure as leader of the Hmong people. We learned to despise his pandering, his pleas for support. We called him a liar and a cheat and cheered when the attorney general dismantled the foundation named after him.

But all along, we were blinded by our youth. We took our cake lives in America for granted, never appreciating the blood that was spilled so that we could enjoy life in the greatest, most free nation in the world.

All along, this mountain of a man was still fighting against the enemies of the Hmong. He was still loyal, especially to those who were hidden away in the jungles of Laos too weak to fight. Even now after heart bypass surgery and a number of other health ailments, General Vang Pao remains the hero of the Hmong.

It saddens me so much to realize that I hadn’t seen this man’s love until now. It sometimes takes sacrifice for a leader to speak loudest and this is the height of sacrifice. When others would have enjoyed an endless life of retirement and tranquility that a man in his position could have taken advantage of, General Vang Pao never quit. He never let go of the dream, the promise. He is truly a man of integrity and fortitude.

He is my hero. He is the Hmong hero. His legacy is forever intact.

my opinion:

Yes, i do believe that the Lao government should be dealt with, but does that make the killing of thousands of people right? Even if the Lao government was overthrown, the Lao people might even become more agressive which will lead to even more killing. General Vang Pao is a great figure in the Hmong community, but do you really think the U.S. (especially Bush) will give a care?? Apparently not. Maybe some day all the Hmong people will be freed, but not today. Not when everythiing else in this country is going wrong.

General

WOW....I’m speechless. You guys are all good and I’m so proud to share my hmong blood with.

Every nation in the world has a history and a leader to lead them, and so does our Hmong nation. Without GVP and his decision making, we hmongs probably would still live in the stone-age era. GVP may one day disappear or fade away and yet he will leave a foot print or a blue print for our future. I learned a lot from this event and had seen our hmongs come together as one. This I can rest assure that my children have a place in this Hmong nation of ours. We as one will have to continue our ancestors journey, their love for peace and freedom. We have to embrace their sufferings, their sacrafies, carry on their names, and above all, the culture/tradition of our Hmong people.

I love you all, my Hmong Nation.

There is no greater man than General Vang Pao to the Hmong ppl.

General Vang Pao is a light that shines for the Hmong people and other ethnic minority group who have looked up to him for a sign of hope for a better tomorrow. Vang Pao not only represent hope but also peace and freedom to all who are oppressed and too weak to fight. I applaud the General for what he stands for - freedom and justice for all especially for the Hmong people. Without General Vang Pao, many Hmong will not have the opportunity to advance themselves this far. General Vang Pao is the voice that cries out in the wilderness - FREE THE HMONG PEOPLE. NOW the government wants to silence his voice for FREEDOM to the Hmong people who are facing genocide in Laos. We must not forget our roots and the General's passion for peace and freedom for all. May God be help the Hmong people and General Vang Pao!

With that said, why do people still fight to return to Laos?

To Wameng

You express what many of us hmong feel. Thank you for writing this article.
You’re right. Gen. Vang Pao could just enjoy his old age like other people, but because of his love for the hmong people he cannot ignore their needs (which is mostly emotional support now). He continues to help them in anyway he can. Like a father who loves his children, he cannot just turn blind eyes to what’s happening to them. He was a great leader and is a great man.

Dear God, please help Gen. Vang Pao. He deserves better than this treatment from the US.

Many people have became

Many people have became interested of learning about the history since the arrest. Hiistorty is sad and not present to learn. history only make people become anger and have evil thoughts becuase they can’t aceept what had happened in the past.

All these news regarding Vang Pao and others ploting ot overthrown Lao government and the plan was to have it done like 9/11 and take control the Lao country strike me in the heart. People in Lao or anywhere else don’t deserve this.

If we want to talk about the history we must remember who were and where came from. The history said. Lao county belongs to Lao and Hmong have a privilliage to live on Lao soil this permmisson was granted by Lao King way back in some time that you and I probably weren’t born yet. People are claiming Vang Pao fighting for the Human Right, but what accomplishment can he gain with plan like that i call his plan a “murder”. People claiming the US is turning their back against Vang Pao who once risk his life to safe US army, but don’t they ever think that he is doing the samething back to Lao? He is turning his back against Lao who onces gave Hmong a land to live and built a home. History said Hmong onces went to Thailand to ask for help and a place to live, they turned them down. Hmong came to Lao and ask the same thing and Lao granted them. Hmong have live in so many places and may countries like in Thailand and Vientman, but why does Hmong aim to invade Lao? Vang Pao wants peace, but blood of other lives will drain like a river stream, he wants freedom at the cost of Lao citizen bloods, and he wants overthrow the Lao government, at the cost of children futrue. He wants peace, freedom and be a great leader but war will follow. Small group of people want to control large group of people. do you think they will stand up and fight back for their own country? Did he ever once asked if Lao people want the country back? will Lao accept and respect him as a leader? I don’t think so. there will be war with in the war itself. I think we are settle and found peace within our self. I like to see Lao country change, advance and have a leader, but not like 9/11. We can’t invade Lao but we can change the Lao condition.

Let’s learn about the history just for the educaiton only and leave it behind and Lao country to Laos people.

Together We Stand, We Stand a Better Chance Tomorrow.

To all my Hmong peoples and any allies who share our cause. Vang Pao is our leader and will continue to be our leader. They can take Vang Pao but will not take our will to the fight. We will not go slient without a fight. As I always said to all my followers, this is our fight, and if we don’t who will. One must spill its our blood to save others and may God give him or her heaven. This war has gone to long, it must end somewhere. The time is now, up and arms my brothers and sisters. Yesterday and today is their field but tomorrow is ours. We stand together for greater voices. Vang Pao and his men had gave it all to us. Now, it is time to given it all back.

Hmong Who Defend the "General"

What saddens me the most is ignorance by the world of our people in Laos and Thailand that are feeling the repercussions of this incident incited by the “General’s” crazy idea.

We must let everyone know our people are dying at this moment. With that said, the “General” is an idiot to believe the CIA would help since there are no “terrorists” or “oil” in Laos.

The “General” fell into their trap because the thought of ruling over people in Laos is what he has always hunger for and still does.

Hmong people want to lead but cannot be leaders because they let their clan ideology and roots overtake them. I have seen many young and old Hmong step into that position and only be dragged down by the clan infrastructure of lust for power, greed, and rule over another.

GVP=hero

GVP is a hero to all even american. but they forget that he did alot of great things that helped them in the vietnam war. and if it wasnt for GVP we couldnt be here rite now. one thing people said that “why should we want to go back to laos, we are in a better and richer county now. but if you listen to OG says “Money can not bring you happese, only your nations can bring you happeses” so friends and family can we pleace come together as one nations like we were before the war. i no lots of you people dont like GVP but pleace just be a hmong and so we all can be knoew to the world. i didnt like GVP too, but after i hear story from my grandpa. that he was going ot be killed by the vietnames on the next day, but GVP no aobut it and send troop to save him. he was thank foor that he wonts died. so ask your grandpa or grandma about story of their past and see if GVP had save their life before. GVP is a great all time hero.

thank you my hmong nations

I agree, however, felt sad myself about it.

Hey I’ve to give it to you for this article, but I felt very sad when you mentioned that the young viewed him as a liar, cheater, and that they cheered when the attorney general dismantled the foundation to be named after him. This to me was a disgraced because it makes me feel as if their parents’ didn’t teach them much about respect and honor for a man who sacrifice his whole life to bring them to the US or they didn’t truly know about this man, Gen. Vang Pao, much. Anyway, I think everyone especially the young should think twice before making any judgments and do some research of their own to understand the truth. I have to say that even though many hated him, I admired and truthfully will side with him for what he have done. Even though he’s now locked up, my spirit and hope is with him always and hoping for his release pretty soon. Hopefully no one will be offended by my comment. Thank you.

Hmong in America

There’s a lot of ignorance in this world and believe me, there’s a lot of ignorant Hmong in America. A lot of the young generations do not feel the same way as the older generations when it comes to the secret war in Laos. We weren’t there to live through it and we weren’t there to witness the merciless brutality. I didn’t live through it, but it still saddens me when I think about how much our fathers, uncles, grandfathers, and brothers sacrificed during the war. They were our heroes. They gave up their lives, not knowing but believing that their children and grandchildren will have a better tomorrow and in my opinion, that better tomorrow is here in America….the land of opportunities. Many of you may agree or disagree, but fighting the war should’ve been the best thing that ever happened to us. Some of us made it thus far, and some of us were less fortunate. I feel awful for the thousands that were left behind in Laos and I do pray that they will one day find peace. Maybe now that Vang Pao got arrested, the UN and the US will pay more attention to the genocide in Laos. But as far as bombing the country of Laos into ruins and taking back a land that Hmong claims is theirs? I totally disagree with Vang Pao’s destructive plans. Enough blood has been shed, do we really want to see more? Did Vang Pao honestly believed that he could’ve overthrown the Lao Government, and what would this cost our people? Did he have enough soldiers that would’ve stand and fought? And what about the innocent citizens of Laos? My grandparents live in Laos, with many other relatives from my mom’s side. They live just like regular citizens. What about their children’s future? And what if he were to lose this fight once again, then what will he do next? I’m not trying too be ignorant or pessimistic because I do respect the General for all his strive and courage, but what was he thinking? I may not know or understand what his true intentions were, but I did hear him speak of his dreams before. This is what he wants for our people, he wants to neutralize Laos to how it once was like in the 1950s. He then wants education, prosperity, industrialization, and modern civilization for the country of Laos and all its natives. This is a very BIG dream Mr. General and I highly applaud you for wanting such an amazing dream. But how can you want this for your people in Laos, when a lot of your people in the US don’t even want it for themselves? The dream that you spoke of are here in our faces, only an arm’s reach away and still, we don’t grab them. How long have we lived in the US now? Most of us have been here for at least 25+ years and our parents still can’t even speak nor write in English. Even the children who are American-born and they can’t even use proper grammar. What about the high rate of Hmong low income households? What about the constitutional rights and the laws in the US….why do we act like we don’t understand a damn thing when we have lived in this country long enough to know. What about young teens married at 14 years old or Hmong gangs that still bang? Killing and beating our own race and then stand together as one when we are being discriminated? This is what I don’t understand. Where’s the parents in all this? The ones that are suppose to encourage us, if not educate us. Instead, most are dwelling in the past over the lost land that was once lived. Grieving over the lost culture, hoping to return to Laos, and trying to adapt to the American lifestyle, it’s no wonder they give little guidance. Lost of identity in America. It is up to us, the second generation in America, to make a change and to better our future. How much longer will it take for us to open our eyes and see what’s right in front of us? A dream such as General Vang Pao’s is too big of a dream for Laos. If we were to ever live a dream such as that, we must start here first.

Hmong People Needs Education

I think that the Hmong People is a Great people if you followed our history closely but we lack a good leader. Almost every Hmong leader sooner or later will exploit it’s people because of the lack of education that we have. Not that i don’t care what happens to the general but i think that when anyone is in power comes corruptions. I hope this will come as an awakening to all Hmong people that we are ONE no matter where you are or what you do. What I like to see is an open leader with nothing to hide. I like to see a Hmong leader that will carry sick small children to the hospital, who would put an injured soldier on his back and try to make it for safety. a truely good leader will earn my respect and will gladly give my life for him if it requires. The Old Hmong keeps on talking about why Hmong people doesn’t love their leaders but shouldn’t it starts the other way around. Until then will have traders and division among our Hmong people. Hopefully we all will learn a great lesson from this all in whatever happens next.

Take the fight to where it hurts

Tell Hmong parents to STOP sending money to LAOS! Tell everyone to STOP travel plans to Laos! Tell business and corporations to STOP doing business with Laos and Vietnam! BOYCOTT products from both countries! Eat pasta instead of rice!

This is the 21st century, governments like Vietnam and Laos that continue to disentrail, mained, kill, rape and torture human beings DO NOT deserve to stay in power! Shame on the current US government for continueing to turn the other eye on this issue! Shame on the current US government for betraying the arrest of General Vang Pao and the Hmong people world wide (one of the most loyal ally to this country)! How can this government and this country continue to go around the world asking for local leaders in Afghanistan and Iraq for help when one of the very same type of leaders has been BETRAYED on our own soil! What hypocrisy! What BUSH-IT!

IF I WAS HIM

General Vang Pao is a mysterious figure to me, I know what he has done, but I have never met him, I have never seen him in person, I have never spoken to him, so I feel I do not know him. He is a great general so I have heard. If I was him I would want to help my people as will, hearing about your people being killed, tortured, being homless, and even dug from there graves is a torturing feeling when you are a leader. You would want to do anything to save your people, but for Vang Pao he cannot just ship all the Hmong to the U.S. It angries his heart to hear the cries of the Hmong dying. He is a General, a leader, I am not surprised he plotted to overthrow the Laos Governent.

If I was him I probably would have considered the plot too. Vang Pao is getting old losing so much time to protect and lead his people, maybe he did it out of desperation to help his people and answer their prays. The Americans don’t seem to have taken that much action in helping the genocides in Laos, I know General Vang Pao is angry, he is powerful and rich, so why would he just watch his people waste away and die, when he could do something about it.

Overthrowing the Lao was not a peaceful answer, but I believe an eye for an eye, the Lao did give the Hmong a home which helped them live and prosper as well as they could, but the Lao also took many Hmong lives away is it a right that they have. HELL NO! That’s why I believed violence was the answer for the Lao. I know I sound cold hearted but the Lao tortured so many Hmong, that I want them to feel the pain as well, because Karma can be a B – - – T!

So for the Americans in the U.S, General Vang Pao may be found at fault, but he was just trying to help his people who are desperating begging for help in their hearts. Think about it what could he have done to help his people that many of us haven’t tired already. He is an old man, time is passing by for him, so overthrowing the Lao and the consequences aren’t as scary as when he leaves us and from heaven he watches his people go on suffering or knowing his people will go on suffering, and not be able to do a thing about it, probably pissed him off, people should realize this.

Many people suffer in this world and live in poverty, but at least some people attempt to help or lessen the suffering. Many leaders want what is best for their people and in doing so sometimes they try so hard they forget about other things!

General Vang Pao

I too believe that General Vang is a hero, but he is not above the law. He fought to help Hmong and he continued to help. BUT, he can not do illegal things. He can not plan to kill and use our money to hurt other people. Hmong are not killers. General Vang does alot of illegal things. We all know that. Yes, he helps others and has helped many hmong but he still continues to do illegal things. We know about his many wifes, illegal in US. we know that he forces people to pay and he uses his influence to get what he wants. We know that the Vangs all do illegal things.

What does Politics mean? There are 3 major subjects. What are they and how to use it?
When to use it? Where to use it? You are a politician, you have to carry 3 bags. What is inside the 3 bags? Please explain. Buble Burst

First and foremost, I am Hmong(not that hmong-american/american hmong crap), I am Hmong. I was born in America but I am Hmong. Hate to burst all the Vang Pao followers-cult’s bubble, but everyone who is hmong knows of the bad things he has done to us. Sure he has done great things, but does it make it right that he has wronged all the other people that put their faith, hope, trust, and especially money, in him. He has scammed all of our fathers, uncles, aunts, grandfathers, and grandmother into believing something while he lived a lavish lifestyle from their monies. He is not a hmong hero. He is a VERY GOOD con-artist. My Hero is my Father, my Uncles, my Grandfather, who all fought in the war, who has shed blood, guts, and tears. We(the hmong people) do not owe anything to this one person. This is long over due. He deserves any and all jail time that he gets. Yes the outsiders do not know everything good thing that Vang Pao has done for our community but they also do not know all the bad things he has done to us also. With that, I leave you with my opinioin.

no one else!!!

If General Vang Pao didn’t do all this, no one else would. The gov’t wouldn’t and doesn’t care about the Hmong people who live in Laos, but that’s dumb because they would get into international issues all but the Hmong. so i believe that this is just one little step that we had to take to make the gov’t see that the Hmong poeple need help because we are suffering and dying in the mountains of Laos. There are still many of us Hmong’s in the jungles living in fear because the hmong people here are living life too good and we aren’t doing anything to help becasue we are so busy with our life trying to survive without the “gun to our heads threat”. i believe that we need to do whatever it takes to make the Hmong people live a better and safer life, here in the US and especially in Laos and Thailand!!!!!!!!!!!!!

If you support the General show ur support by holding a rally and a function to honor him for all that hes been doing for the hmong communities. Do this for him at the end of june around the 30th or so. I support him and he has made a difference to my family and those he saved from the horror. Fight along side wit him give him the power by joning his ranks of freedom fighters. Show that u all have courage to face danger because I do.
