Weekend what's what 8/28-9/1: Republican party!

by l’etoile magazine staff • August 27, 2008 •

As Republican delegates from all over the country breeze into town in preparation for next week’s RNC melee, the city is literally ablaze with more art, entertainment, and political buzz than you can shake a stick at (no State Fair pun intended).

Amid RNC ‘paranoia,’ CBS Outdoor pulls ‘Soldiers’ billboards

Visitors flying into the Twin Cities for the Republican National Convention were, up until last Friday, to be greeted by the gigantic face of a U.S. soldier as they departed the airport. New York–based artist Suzanne Opton photographed active-duty military personnel and arranged to have their faces appear on five billboards in Minneapolis and St. Paul. One, a 48-footer on Highway 5, was to be positioned at the intersection of Post Road just outside the international airport. But CBS Outdoor cancelled the contract, citing that they feared drivers might misinterpret their message. MORE »

Interview: The Nancy Drew Crew, feminists and activists on the mic

The Nancy Drew Crew are not your typical hip-hop group, even for a community like the Twin Cities that’s not exactly your typical hip-hop scene. Coming from a queer-feminist activist background, the group’s two MCs—MC Smells and MC Mayhem—rap about, among other things, deodorant, DIY arts and crafts, and the inequities of college education on their debut EP, The Case is Closed. I sat down at Hard Times with the two MCs, along with their DJ and producer Skullbuster, fresh off their first West Coast tour, hoping to find out a little more about the group that City Pages recently called, endearingly, “the Shaggs of hip-hop.” MORE »

Profile of a collector: Scrapper Joe (scrap metal, etc.)

In this city, a pick-up truck creeping down the alley loaded with washers, bike frames, and other metal scrap is not an uncommon sight. All kinds of people collect—as this is being written, a woman, babe strapped to her back, is picking through the recycling in the alley, placing aluminum cans in the bottom of a stroller that carries another child. But Scrapper Joe, as he’s known in Minneapolis’s West Bank, only patrols the alleys when he’s broke. MORE »

Windpower: The promise and the challenge

Things People Say

Readers sound off on disco, the Unabomber, and Santa Christ

“If there was any deep division in the music scene in 1977, it wasn’t people scratching their heads at less than stellar releases from Kansas, Foreigner, Styx, or Steely Dan and Neil Young, it was the demise of live music as disco came to prominence. I could make the argument that Kansas, Nugent and other arena acts GAINED fans because people who hated disco REALLY hated disco (myself included).”
-comment on “Sucking in ’77”

“John Jansen’s comments made me think of some of the bad things white people have done. Timothy McVeigh! Terry Nichols! The Unabomber! Not to mention almost all the serial killers in the U.S.! And all those Arab terrorists — they’re Caucasian! I just don’t think we can afford to have white people running this country. They are way too dangerous.”
-comment on “The Battle for Pine County”

“I really used to be amazed how these individuals could be so blatant about who they really are, and yet have their assemblies still pour money into their pockets so they can live like movie stars…and then you have those who are of the new faith: CASHIANS and followers of Santa Christ.”

Allison Herrera - Walker Art Center - The Unconvention Show

“The UnConvention is a non-partisan collective of citizens who have come together to create a forum in which to promote the democratic and free exchange of ideas on important issues. It exists as a counterpoint to the highly scripted and predetermined nature of the contemporary presidential nomination process and convention.” from TheUnconvention.com MORE »
