The night I got arrested

The police shouted again, unintelligibly, from the megaphone. Something about we had to leave or we would be arrested….

I wasn’t particularly interested in getting arrested. I started to walk toward the side…

“You are all under arrest,” said the megaphone, more clearly this time. “Sit down with your hands on your head.”

“Really?” I said. “Aw, man. This sucks

Press freedom at issue after RNC

On the morning after arrests of more than a dozen journalists, journalists and advocates for freedom of the press delivered a strong rebuke and call for action to city officials in St. Paul. Twin Cities Media Alliance organizer Nancy Doyle delivered a letter with more than 50,000 signatures to St. Paul Mayor Chris Coleman, MinneapolisSt. Paul City Attorney John Choi, and HennepinRamsey County Attorney Susan Gaertner’s offices. Doyle was accompanied by about a dozen local journalists (including Twin Cities Daily Planet editor Mary Turck) and Democracy Now’s Amy Goodman, Nicole Salazar and Sharif Abdel Kaddous, whose arrests focused national attention on police actions in St. Paul during the RNC. Attorneys for Minnesota Nine call criminal charges ‘outrageous’

In the days leading up to the Republican National Convention, a series of police raids led by the Ramsey County Sheriff’s Office resulted in the arrest of eight people for allegedly conspiring to disrupt the political gathering. On Wednesday the individuals were each charged with a single count of “conspiracy to commit riot in the second degree in furtherance of terrorism.” The criminal complaint details a far-ranging plot by members of the RNC Welcoming Committee that included plans to kidnap delegates, attack cops with urine and molotov cocktails and ultimately bring the convention to a halt. Mississippi Watershed group retools grants program, hopes to reach diverse communities

A Twin Cities watershed organization has a quarter million dollars of grant money to divvy up over the next few months, and they’re hoping groups that have traditionally not applied for funding will show up for an information meeting on Monday, September 8.

“Look at the demographics of our watershed,” explains Jenny Winkelman, Education & Outreach Coordinator for the Mississippi Watershed Management Organization (MWMO), which covers portions of the cities of Minneapolis, St. Paul, Lauderdale, and St. Anthony. “We have a huge audience we’re trying to reach, many of them fairly recent immigrant communities, such as the Hmong and Somali communities. Most traditional watershed materials are produced for a literate, English-speaking audience and may miss important populations.” MORE »

Kellog Blvd. Demonstrators

During early afternoon, while many people were still making their way to the State Capitol for the scheduled march, a group of about twenty-five demonstrators, proclaiming “We’re Queer, We’re Here” tried to march down Kellogg Boulevard towards the Xcel Energy Center, site of the Republican National Convention.

Kellogg Boulevard is reserved for use by buses delivering and retrievingdelegates to the convention. It is bisected by concrete barriers, chain link fence, and barb wire. Drivers who go down the rght side of the road are shunted onto 35E unless they turn right onto College Avenue or Mulberry Street. Pedestrians cannot get through and are shunted onto a promenade along 35E.

When confronted with a line of mounted police on one side of the boulevard, the demonstrators ran around the police and spilled objects such as waste cans and newspaper racks on the street.

The mounted police regrouped and stood directly in front of the demonstrators. At this point, some buses started to leave, coming north on Kellogg from behind the gated fence.

Detained Glass Bead videographer on policing in the age of YouTube

This morning, a group of journalists and activists held a press conference to raise awareness of what they see as a frightening trend: police, in the run-up to the Republican National Convention, increasingly targeting journalists. I’ll have video of the conference later today, but here’s a quick video on Vlad Teichberg, a member of the Glass Bead Collective, a New York new-media art group. He and two colleagues were detained by Minneapolis police this week without charge and searched. Police confiscated notes, computers and videocameras, exposing the film in one camera and finally returning the equipment days later. He says we’re at a cultural tipping point: With so many citizens toting cameras to events like RNC protests, police have little choice but to follow strict police protocols — or else run the risk of being outed on YouTube.
