Town Hall Meeting Addresses Chemicals in Lake Calhoun

On May 10 about 70 area residents gathered at St. Mary’s Greek Orthodox Church for a town meeting concerning perfluorochemicals (PFCs) found in Lake Calhoun. This was in response to a warning issued April 16 by the Minnesota Department of Health advising people to not eat more than one bluegill sunfish per month caught in the upper Minneapolis chain of lakes, including Lake Calhoun. This advice was based on analysis of recently completed fish sampling in Lake Calhoun by the Minnesota Pollution Control Agency that showed a high level of PFOS (perfluorooctane sulfonate) in fish tissue. Other species of fish also have limits, but these also relate to mercury and PCBs. More than a dozen other lakes in the metro area will also be tested. MORE »
